New Leadership in the World of Philanthropy

Open only to CIC Institutional Member presidents and foundation leaders. Registration is required.

This meeting provides an occasion for CIC college and university presidents from across the nation to engage in candid conversation with senior foundation officers. In 2013 the Conversation will include six distinct sessions, with generous amounts of time for discussion during each session as well as informal networking opportunities between sessions. In our experience, the presidents of colleges and universities are better equipped to guide both academic affairs and development offices in making thoughtful approaches to foundations when they think about the hard issues well before a particular grant idea surfaces. This annual discussion is CIC's contribution to nurturing those habits of thought at the leadership level.

This year we will bring together philanthropic leaders who are relatively new to their current positions—but highly experienced in the philanthropic world. The 2013 Foundation Conversation will feature the following presenters, followed by small group discussions with most of the presenters.
  • Barbara Chow, Director, Education Program, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
  • John Ettinger, Chief Executive Officer, The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust
  • Daniel Greenstein, Director, Postsecondary Success Program, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Earl Lewis, President, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
  • Judith Shapiro, President, The Teagle Foundation
  • Eugene R. Tempel, Founding Dean, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
