Creating Peer Partnerships for At-Risk Students: A Four-Year Case StudyCreating Peer Partnerships for At-Risk Students: A Four-Year Case Study7
Gaining acceptance to college is often only the first of many hurdles that at-risk students face in their academic careers. Other challenges, often academic, but also social and cultural, can lessen a student’s sense of belonging and derail college success. To raise success rates, Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI), with grant assistance from the Council of Independent Colleges, has developed a peer-mentoring program that is making a difference for participating students and their institutions.

ACI’s executive director will share results that show how peer mentoring increases the number of at-risk college students who persist, succeed, and graduate from ACI member colleges and universities. Available on nine ACI member campuses, the program matches at-risk first-year students with junior and senior peer mentors from similar backgrounds who guide them through the critical first year of college. By building a “relationship bridge” among mentees, mentors, and the campus community and its support services, the ACI program provides an early warning and intervention system that helps at-risk students overcome challenges.

Mick Weltman, Executive Director, Associated Colleges of Illinois

Here to Help: How State Councils Can Leverage Funding and Scale to Improve Institutional Decision MakingHere to Help: How State Councils Can Leverage Funding and Scale to Improve Institutional Decision Making12Colleges and universities increasingly need to assess the cost-effectiveness of their academic programs.
