2017 Presidents Institute to Explore Transformational Change, Value of Independent Colleges, and Power of Talk in Digital Age

Education for America's Future

Presidents will explore the theme, “Education for America’s Future,” and other important leadership issues during CIC’s 2017 Presidents Institute. The premier annual meeting of college and university presidents and the largest in the country, the Institute will take place in Orlando, Florida, January 4–7, 2017.

The Institute will feature numerous experts as well as seasoned college presidents and scholars. Plenary speakers will cover a diverse range of topics:
  • Sherry Turkle, Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology and director of Initiative on Technology and Self at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will discuss “Reclaiming Conversation in the Academy” based on her latest book, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age.
  • James B. Stewart, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the New York Times and author of numerous books including DisneyWar (2005), Heart of a Soldier (2002), and Den of Thieves (1991), will address the role of a liberal arts college education in “The Enduring Value of an Independent College Education for America’s Future.”
  • A panel of seasoned college presidents will describe strategies for truly transformational institutional change in the face of economic and operating challenges. “Presidential Strategies for Transformational Leadership and Campus Turnarounds” will feature Jeffrey R. Docking, president of Adrian College (MI), Walter M. Kimbrough, president of Dillard University (LA), and Elizabeth Kiss, president of Agnes Scott College (GA). Scott Jaschik, co-founder and editor of Inside Higher Ed, will moderate the panel.
Past participants have praised the Institute for providing a forum for candid discussion of controversial issues, opportunities to learn from experts, and time to network with presidential colleagues who lead similar institutions. After the 2016 Institute, University of the Pacific (CA) President Pamela A. Eibeck remarked, “This was my first time attending a CIC Presidents Institute. I was very impressed with the amount and quality of the information and the interactions—and I intend to return.” After having participated in several Presidents Institutes Associated Colleges of the South (GA) President R. Owen Williams said, “CIC hosted yet another fabulous conference. CIC selects the best topics, locations, and facilities, all of which make for the most productive and useful conferences available to college presidents.”

The 2017 Institute includes the New Presidents Program on January 3–4, the Presidents Governance Academy on January 3–4, and a full Spouses and Partners Program on January 4–7.

All program sessions of the Institute will take place at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek Hotel.
