Updated Talking about Private Colleges Workshops Will Respond to Changing Perceptions

Talking About Private Colleges logoIn 2019, CIC planned a series of regional workshops designed to share key data about the impact and value of independent colleges and to give participants—teams composed of presidents, trustees, senior staff, and faculty members—tools and practice in shaping community attitudes about private higher education and their institutions through informal conversations.

The first three Talking about Private Colleges: Busting the Myths workshops were held as scheduled at Bay Path University (MA), University of Puget Sound (WA), and Wofford College (SC) during fall 2019 and winter 2020. The workshops provided an engaging opportunity to explore national data about topics such as the true cost of college, student aid and debt levels, college access, student success, career preparation, and students’ political engagement. Participants also shared examples of the questions they had heard from neighbors, family members, and friends and of effective, as well as less successful, answers they had offered.

Talking about Private Colleges workshops that were originally scheduled for spring and fall 2020 have been rescheduled. The series will “reboot” in March 2021 with refreshed content as well as new dates.

Recognizing that changed social, economic, and political conditions have brought new questions to the fore and require re-focused arguments for the value of independent colleges, CIC staff, led by CIC Senior Fellow and Indiana Wesleyan University President S. Georgia Nugent, will adjust the workshop content to assure that it addresses shifts in community questions and perceptions related to the pandemic and recent protests against racial injustice.

More information will be available this fall; registration will open in early December. View more information about the workshop series, which is generously supported by the Henry Luce Foundation, EAB, SAGE Scholars, Inc., and Sodexo.
