Workshops for Department and Division Chairs Go Online

In the pandemic era, the role of department or division chair is more important than ever to an independent college’s or university’s success. Increased uncertainty in the higher education landscape means that maintaining effective practices with regard to budgets and departmental practices have greater value now than in the past. CIC’s 2021 Workshops for Department and Division Chairs will meet the moment with a focus on practical knowledge and leadership skills that enhance resilience for chairs and the faculty and staff members with whom they work.

Due to public health precautions, all 2021 Workshops for Department and Division Chairs will be offered online in a two-day format. Participants can choose from the following dates: April 9–10; May 17–18; and June 7–8. Each day, the sessions will run from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET.

Experienced chief academic officers, deans, department and division chairs, and attorneys who specialize in relevant legal issues will lead these online sessions. Topics will include:

  • Serving as Department or Division Chair: Beyond the Job Description;
  • The Department or Division Budget;
  • Using Data Effectively;
  • Preventive Law I: Adhering to Institutional Procedures and Policies—Hiring Practices;
  • Preventive Law II: Adhering to Institutional Procedures and Policies—Faculty Performance Evaluation;
  • Dealing with Difficult Faculty Conversations; and
  • Building and Maintaining Good Departmental Relations.

The Workshops are designed for new and incoming department chairs from a variety of disciplines. “CIC’s workshops provide excellent information and resources to assist chairs with the professional challenges of leading their departments or divisions. In addition to receiving expert guidance from experienced facilitators, participants have the opportunity to interact and learn from peers about best practices for handling a variety of chair responsibilities,” said Jonnie Guerra, CIC senior advisor for academic programs.

Detailed information about the program for each Workshop will be available on the CIC website in mid-February.
