Spring Workshops for Department and Division Chairs to Take Place in Four Cities

CIC’s 2016 Workshops for Department and Division Chairs will take place in four cities across the U.S. this spring (see below). Valuable for experienced as well as new chairs at independent colleges and universities, the 15th annual workshops will focus on the joys and challenges of leading from the middle. Interactive sessions will explore a diverse range of topics:
  • Serving as Department or Division Chair: Beyond the Job Description;
  • The Department or Division Budget;
  • Using Data Effectively;
  • Preventive Law I: Adhering to Institutional Procedures and Practices—Hiring Practices;
  • Preventive Law II: Adhering to Institutional Procedures and Practices—Faculty Performance Evaluation;
  • Handling Difficult Faculty Conversations;
  • Building a Cohesive Department (new this spring); and
  • Becoming a Leader on Campus.
Experienced chief academic officers, department and division chairs, and attorneys who specialize in relevant legal issues will lead the mix of plenary and small group discussions. In addition, participants will guide breakfast discussion sessions.

“CIC encourages each institution to send several department chairs to a workshop so they can support one another in instituting improvements upon their return to campus. In fact in 2015, 17 chairs from one institution participated in the Cleveland workshop,” said Kathy Whatley, CIC vice president for annual programs. A single representative from an institution, and deans and associate deans who work closely with chairs, also would find the program beneficial and are welcome to participate.
