Leaders from CIC member institutions gathered in November at the 2022 Institute for Chief Academic Officers with Chief Financial and Chief Enrollment Officers and in January for the 2023 Presidents Institute. Colleagues engaged in timely and practical discussions on how to design a thriving future for their institutions and shape the trajectory of the independent sector in higher education as a whole.   • Forward-Looking Leaders

    “If historians look back 50 years from now, what would they say about your presidency?” This question framed the Presidents Institute keynote address, "The Presidential Challenge: Race, History, and the Urgency of Action Now,” delivered by Eddie R. Cole, associate professor of higher education and organizational change at UCLA and author of The Campus Color Line: College Presidents and the Struggle for Black Freedom.  Read the full article

    “Anticipating Workforce Needs” featured Bay Area and Silicon Valley industry and tech experts to discuss how independent colleges and universities can prepare students with the skills they need to succeed in the workforce of today and throughout long careers.  Read the full article  
  • Financial Sustainability

    During “Campuses at the Inflection Point: Strategic Innovation for Sustainability and Equity,” Mary B. Marcy, president emerita of Dominican University of California and author of The Small College Imperative: Models for Sustainable Futures, explored the current challenges faced by independent higher education.  Read the full article  
  • Data-Informed Decision Making

    Sessions such as "Using Data for Institutional Effectiveness,” “Data Informed Program Portfolio Development,” “Making the Case with Data,” and “By the Numbers: Using Big Data to Build and Shape Enrollment Success” offered multiple perspectives and strategies on how to collect, analyze, use, and share data to support strategic priorities.  Read the full article  
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity

    Participants in “Creating an Inclusive Campus” discussed the importance of language: inclusive excellence is not the same as cultural awareness. Often, presenters noted, institutions spend so much time developing an inclusive environment for students that the mentoring and support that faculty needs can be overlooked and a central aspect of true inclusion is neglected.  Read the full article
