Campus Leaders Explore Solutions to Pressing Challenges

Leaders of independent colleges and universities gathered for two annual Institutes in recent months: CIC’s 2022 Presidents Institute and the 2021 Institute for Chief Academic Officers, with Chief Student Affairs and Chief Diversity Officers. As CIC returned to in-person programming, both Institutes were designed to support campus leadership, advance institutional excellence, and stimulate fellowship, renewal, and inspiration.     Institutions Work to Strengthen Social Justice, Civic Engagement Efforts

    Participants in both Institutes explored a variety of strategies to enhance civic education and improve diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. Keynote presenters emphasized the role of higher education in strengthening democracy, the essential importance of addressing structural racism, and practical ways to build antiracist institutions.  Read the full article

    Recent developments have underscored the increased importance of campus collaborations—from working with boards of trustees, to cooperation across departments, to building external partnerships.     With colleges and universities continuing to face pressures on enrollment and finances, several Institute sessions examined new models.     Approaches to Student Success, Retention, and Well-being Examined

    Student success, retention, and mental health were top concerns on campus even before the pandemic began, which has only made them more central to campus leaders in all roles. Institute presenters noted that to achieve equity in student success, campuses should cultivate relationship-rich interactions, a sense of belonging, collaborative learning, holistic advising, high-impact practices, and more.  Read the full article
