Smaller private colleges and universities provide students with opportunities to apply knowledge from their classes in meaningful ways, such as through internships, clinical assignments, and other experiences in the workplace. Over two-thirds of seniors (65 percent) at private non-doctoral colleges (meaning private colleges that don’t offer PhD programs) participated in an internship, compared with 56 percent of seniors at doctoral public universities (meaning universities that train PhD students and undergrads). Same with first-year students: those at private colleges are more likely to participate in an internship than freshmen at public institutions.
