Keynote
speakers and panelists at the 2007 CIC Presidents Institute, held
January 4–7 in Tucson, Arizona, addressed the theme of “The
Anticipatory President and the 21st Century Campus” and focused
on international issues, higher education economics, institutional
planning, and the future of science. The 292 presidents and 176
spouses who attended gave outstanding evaluations to the conference
as a whole.
CIC’s
annual Institute for Chief Academic Officers attracted the largest
number of academic leaders in the 34-year history of the meeting.
In addition to a record number of CAOs, a large number of chief
student affairs officers participated in this joint conference,
traditionally held by CIC every five years, to explore effective
ways of collaborating to ensure student persistence and achievement.
The Keck
Foundation has awarded CIC a grant for the Network for Effective
Language Learning, to strengthen language instruction at small and
mid-sized private colleges and universities. In addition, a grant
from the Mellon Foundation will allow CIC to pilot an Institutional
Diagnostic Service, to help new presidents identify challenges and
opportunities for strategic actions.
The HCAP
website has been well received since its launch in November, netting
thousands of visitors and stimulating college officials to take
action to preserve important campus buildings and landscapes.
