Questions & CommentsFoundations of Excellence in the First Year of College

In cooperation with The Policy Center on the First Year of College, CIC is working to improve the learning outcomes, success, and persistence of students in the foundational year of college. This project will produce, for the first time, a sector-specific, aspirational model for the first year of college and a method to evaluate campus achievement of these foundations. More detailed information can be found on The Policy Center's website.

Program Status: In 2002-03, the Policy Center worked with more than 100 CIC institutions that were assessing the status of their first year programs. During the 2003-2004 academic year, 12 of those institutions engaged in in-depth testing of the assessment tools being developed by the Center. Participating colleges convened in Asheville, NC, on October 22-23, 2004, to review project results to date; and during a national teleconference on December 2, 2004, shared this information with a larger number of institutions. Click here for a list of some of the results outlined in 2004; or visit the Policy Center's website for detailed information about the project.
