Serving
To Learn,
Learning To Serve in Promoting School Success
In 1996, CIC awarded 11 participating private colleges and universitieseach
cooperating with nearby schoolsto establish service-learning opportunities
for college students that focus on improving the school success of elementary,
middle, or secondary students. Participating institutions received grants
of up to $18,000, over a two-year period, to support improvements at their
institution and to enable them to cooperate with other institutions in
the project.
Funding: Corporation for National Service
Program Status: This project concluded in 1998.
Participating Institutions:
- Barry University, Florida
- California Lutheran University, California
- Colorado Christian University, Colorado
- Dillard University, Louisiana
- Elon College, North Carolina
- Neumann College, Pennsylvania
- Mount Union College & Walsh University, both of Ohio
- Rivier College, Massachusetts
- Spalding University, Kentucky
The Serving to Learn in Promoting School Success program enriched the
college community in many respects. It helped students develop a deeper
understanding of what their service experiences mean. It increased faculty
understanding of the symbiotic links between learning and service; the
very process of engaging in service-learning energized many individual
professors. It helped administrators find a sharper focus for student
learning. Overall, the project helped institutions fulfill the explicit
commitments of their missions to work with communities beyond the campus,
often with the effect that the institution has learned at least as much
as it has taught.
Previous findings from this program are reported in the book Journey
to Service-Learning: Experiences from Independent Liberal Arts Colleges
and Universities, published by CIC in 1996.
