The conference aims to help campus communications professionals develop techniques that work, prepare media materials that produce results, and make contacts with some of the nation’s top reporters, editors, producers, bloggers, and digital media leaders. It also features presentations and panel discussions with college and university public relations professionals who will share best practices and new ideas.
Participants will learn first-hand from representatives of major news organizations how to accomplish the following:
- Approach key reporters who cover higher education for national and regional newspapers, network television, web publications and blogs, news services, and magazines;
- Create and pitch story ideas to editors and freelancers;
- Propose radio and television features;
- Pitch article ideas via email, mail, telephone, and social media; and
- Use new media to make the case for their institutions.

The 2014 College Media Conference will take place in Washington, DC, at the four-diamond Omni Shoreham Hotel. The Omni Shoreham is situated on 11 acres near scenic Rock Creek Park—and just steps away from the National Zoo (home of mother panda Mei Xiang and baby Bao Bao).
Before or after the conference, participants can explore such nearby landmarks as the White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and U.S. Capitol. Participants also can tour Georgetown and visit the Smithsonian and other fine museums and galleries, restaurants, theaters, and entertainment venues.
