Students and Alumni Contributing
to the Public Good

Research provides ample evidence that both independent colleges and their
alumni contribute to the betterment of society in greater proportion than
public universities and their graduates. Independent college and university
alumni are more likely to work full-time for or contribute financially
to nonprofits; to be involved in community service and volunteer activities;
and are more likely to graduate faster and therefore enter the American
workforce sooner. In addition, independent college and university alumni
are more likely than public college and university alumni to say that
their undergraduate institution instilled in them a deeper sense of values
and ethics, community appreciation, and other character attributes that
are important to leadership in society.
- Values and Ethics
Independent colleges place greater emphasis on values and ethics
than public universities—and their graduates express a correspondingly
stronger set of personal and professional values, and a greater commitment
to improving society.
- Higher Graduation Rates
Independent colleges and universities are both more effective
and more efficient at producing graduates than public institutions.
- Community Involvement
Independent college students and alumni are more involved in
community service and volunteer activities than students and alumni
from public universities.
- Contributions to Nonprofits
Independent college alumni are more likely than public university
graduates to work in education or nonprofit organizations, and are as
likely to contribute financially to nonprofits and foundations.
