Learning Outside the Classroom

 

Independent college students are more likely than their counterparts at public institutions to participate in internships, study abroad, and research projects with faculty members.

Fact 1 - Participation in Internships
Nearly half of independent college alumni surveyed report participation in college-sponsored internships or other applied learning, more than the alumni of any other type of institution.

Fact 2 - Study Abroad
Independent college alumni surveyed are more likely than public university alumni to have studied abroad or to have participated in another off-campus educational experience (42 percent vs. 27 percent).

Fact 3 - Student Enrichment
Independent college and university students are more likely than public university students to say they performed community service, worked on research with faculty, studied abroad, or studied foreign languages. For instance, 67 percent of independent college seniors say they had a capstone senior course or program, compared with 51 percent of the public university seniors.

Fact 4 - Research Project with Faculty Members
Fifty-three percent of independent college alumni surveyed report participation in faculty-directed research or independent study, compared with 37 percent of the alumni of public universities.
