Council of American Overseas Research Centers, CIC, and U.S. Department of State Seminar: Teaching About Islam and Middle Eastern Culture

Due to the popularity and impact of the previous Teaching About Islam and Middle Eastern Culture seminar held in January 2004, the U.S. Department of State has reallocated funds in order to make it possible for CIC and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers to offer an additional seminar at the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR) in Amman, Jordan, this December 28, 2004 through January 18, 2005. The seminar will again take place over a three-week period and participants will include faculty members at CIC colleges and universities.

This is an excellent opportunity for full-time faculty members in all fields at CIC member institutions to learn more about the Middle East at a time when knowledge and teaching about the region are more important than ever. Intended for faculty members who are not already experts on this subject, the seminar will allow participants to learn about the Middle East and to understand better the region, Islam, and Middle Eastern history as it informs current times. The seminar will also include visits to archaeological sites such as Petra and Jerash.

Funder: U.S. Department of State

Program Status: Twelve CIC faculty members from all fields have been selected to participate in this second Islam seminar. Participants were selected from nominations for the January 2004 seminar, during which 12 CIC faculty members also participated.
