Strengthening Academic Leadership in Independent Colleges and Universities
To build effective institutions, colleges and universities must have
a strong foundation of leadership in their academic departments and divisions.
Developing the leadership of departments and divisions is key to carrying
out the institutional mission and adapting to changing institutional or
student and faculty needs.
To assist independent colleges and universities in strengthening leadership
by department/division chairs, the Council of Independent Colleges is
offering a series of Workshops for experienced, as well as new, chairs.
The Workshops focus on the distinctive challenges of department leadership
in small and medium-sized private colleges and universities.
In working with faculty members and students, and in shaping the curriculum, department and division chairs lead efforts to develop a vision for departments that support the mission of the institution. Their work includes projecting where their programs should be in ten years and taking the steps to reach those goals. In addition to this envisioning, chairs also need to be grounded in the here and now. Their responsibilities include the many daily details that allow the department to function effectively, such as arranging course schedules, avoiding legal pitfalls, aiding search committees, and helping faculty members grow in their teaching and scholarship.
The Workshops are designed to serve both experienced and new chairs of departments or divisions at independent colleges and universities. Campuses are encouraged to send several department chairs to the Workshop so they may support one another in instituting change upon return to their college or university. A single representative from an institution would also find the Workshop helpful. Chief academic officers, deans, and associate deans who work closely with chairs, would find the program beneficial and are welcome to attend.
In this interactive program, participants will learn from experts on the role of the chair and, with colleagues from similar institutions, they will explore the following issues:
Leading academic change and the essential role of the department chair
Recruitment, selection, and hiring of new faculty members who are compatible with the mission of the institution and the department
Developing departmental goals in alignment with the institutional mission
Criteria for evaluation of faculty members
Faculty development at institutions that emphasize student learning
Creating a team or collaborative leadership with faculty colleagues in the department, as well as with institution-wide administrators
Legal issues related to faculty hiring and evaluations for promotion and tenure
The status of the faculty handbook as a legal contract
Termination of faculty members with or without tenure
ADA issues of particular concern to department chairs
Working with small departments
Inter-departmental cooperation
To maximize the
value of the Workshop, prior to the meeting participants are encouraged
to provide CIC with a list of any issues they would like to discuss. These
issues might be specific cases the chair is already addressing or general
concerns about the role of the chair. During the Workshop, discussion
groups will be held on “best practices” of department/division chairs.
Written materials for distribution to other Workshop participants are
welcome. Please bring 50 copies.
CIC is planning to build on the Workshop efforts in several additional venues. In June, CIC will initiate a listserv for department chairs at independent colleges and universities, which will help Workshop participants continue their discussions. Another vehicle for continuing the conversation will be a session for academic vice presidents at the CIC Institute for Chief Academic Officers November 2-5 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. One of the sessions will focus on effective ways of working with department/division chairs and assisting chairs with their responsibilities.
