Framing Conversations for the Future
In a time of significant institutional change, planning matters deeply. The presidential role is pivotal in any successful planning initiative, but the conversations must involve a wide-ranging community and many intersecting factors.

Financial considerations influence many of these discussions. This year’s Presidents Institute will address a number of the economic challenges faced by presidents. Among them…How can presidents budget strategically? In the current higher education marketplace, how should tuition-dependent colleges and universities use institutional financial aid (or tuition discounting) as an enrollment management tool? What are the evolving approaches to funding technological developments? What are the implications of growing competition for the adult-oriented, masters' level programs that often provide a critical revenue stream? Do we have a sufficient understanding of instructional costs? What fundraising opportunities are available?

In addition, a number of sessions will address changing institutional practices in planning, communication, and decision-making. Are current governance and decision-making structures able to render the effective and timely decisions colleges now require, given the pace of change, as well as extraordinary financial and enrollment challenges?  How can institutions find and apply relevant information, given their broadening constituencies?

Sessions

President-to-President
At its core, the Presidents Institute is designed to provide multiple opportunities for presidents to share ideas with presidents of similar institutions. The formal program includes sessions led by presidents, not only to share effective institutional practices but also to discuss open-ended issues. In addition, the Institute builds into the schedule a variety of networking opportunities, such as dinners and recreation.

Individual Consultations
We will again assist in arranging opportunities for individuals to hold confidential conversations with various speakers and sponsors, including retirement planners from TIAA-CREF.

Annual Meeting
CIC’s annual membership business meeting takes place at the Presidents Institute on Sunday, January 6. The agenda this year will include a report on CIC’s strategic planning initiative.

Spouses Program

Presidential spouses are a heterogeneous group of individuals with a wide range of concerns. Some have full-time or part-time positions outside the home while others devote their full energies to the work of a presidential spouse. Developed by an advisory group of presidential spouses, the annual Spouses Program runs concurrently with the program for presidents and provides opportunities for spouses of presidents to share information and advice.

Conference Colleague Program: Spouses attending the Presidents Institute for the first time, both spouses of new presidents and first-time participants, may request a Conference Colleague (use Colleague request form on CIC’s website or call CIC’s office). The program matches a first-time participant with a more experienced participant, who will introduce him or her to colleagues, answer questions about the conference, and share information on the role of the presidential spouse. Colleagues will meet each other on Friday, January 4, at 4:00 p.m.

Program Elements:

Breakfast Seminar for Spouses of New Presidents, Nancy Shinn, Presidential Spouse, Berea College and John Howarth, presidential spouse, Pacific University

Welcome Breakfast a time for informal networking as well as introducing Conference Colleagues

How To Talk with Anyone, or You Too Could Be a Talk Show Host, Toby Baker, host of Toby Talk and presidential spouse at Ohio Northern University

On-Site Chat Room: Because presidential spouses—like presidents—fill unique roles with no counterparts on their own campuses, the Spouses Program is providing opportunities for presidential spouses to confer with colleagues.  A room for informal conversation among spouses will be available throughout the conference.

Male Presidential Spouses Reception, hosted by Stuart W. Showalter, Presidential Spouse, Goshen College

Traveling Mercies for the Long Haul, Serious and humorous insights into the mistakes made and lessons learned en route. Jan Carlberg, presidential spouse, Gordon College, and Dinah Taylor, presidential spouse, Cumberland College
