The Council of Independent Colleges’ annual Presidents Institute has become the largest annual meeting of college and university presidents in the country, bringing together the chief executives of independent institutions to explore practical approaches to the major issues faced by campus leaders. The Institute includes a full Presidential Spouses Program and the New Presidents Program.

About the Theme: "A Dynamic Equilibrium: Essential Missions, Evolving Models"

Over the years, independent colleges and universities have succeeded by carefully balancing educational mission with imaginative approaches to new circumstances. Persistent economic challenges, changing student demographics, increased competition from two-year and for-profit colleges, and ever-rising costs put at risk the future viability of the dynamic equilibrium of our past success. How can the small, residential model of a liberal arts education, with its emphasis on a high degree of student-faculty interaction, remain sustainable? Will a stripped-down delivery model dilute the missions of our institutions, reduce quality, or undercut the distinctive role of private colleges? Featured speakers, experienced college presidents, and knowledgeable consultants will provide stimulating and practical insights into these questions for participants in CIC’s 2011 Presidents Institute.

What are the main challenges to efforts by presidents to preserve essential educational missions while considering new business models? How can presidents make the case for the liberal arts college as a critical public good? How is the present economic downturn affecting the present and future of private colleges and universities? How is the dynamic equilibrium between presidential leadership and board governance best achieved? Do the market conditions of for-profit higher education provide opportunities for new program development and joint ventures between independent colleges and for-profit providers? CIC’s 2011 Presidents Institute will explore these and other issues by drawing on the practical successes of presidents and on the experiences of other experts who have broad perspectives on the trajectory of our enterprise.
