Counterpoint to Presidential Careerism, by Doug Lederman
Inside Higher Ed, Tuesday, January 8, 2008

At a time when the pay of leading college presidents soars over $1 million a year and many a campus leader prefers the title “CEO,” it sounds almost quaint to hear several dozen top administrators wrestle with such a fundamentally personal — and yet outward-looking — question as: “How might the thoughtful coupling of a president’s personal sense of calling with the mission of the institution she or he serves enhance presidential leadership?” Yet that’s just what unfolded during the just-completed Presidents Institute of the Council of Independent Colleges.

The following article by the New York Times was released on the day of the awards banquet and shared with attendees at CIC's Presidents Institute.

The council has compiled an extensive electronic catalog of noteworthy architecture on nearly 400 campuses. The 2,000 examples range from the historic to the ultracontemporary, from stately to quirky, ornate to austere. The searchable Web site (www.cic.edu/hcap) contains images as well as information about the architects, materials, styles, functions and time periods of these campus structures.
