2007 Conversation Between Foundation Officers
and College and University Presidents

Tuesday, October 9, 2007
TIAA-CREF Headquarters
730 Third Avenue
New York, New York 10017

Theme

Foundations Debate Their Own Futures: The Impact on Higher Education of Changing Assumptions about How Philanthropy Works

The premise in choosing this theme is that the landscape is shifting rapidly in the foundation world and presidents of universities and colleges need to take account of the shift if they are to continue to be effective in seeking foundation grants. Increasingly, foundations are focusing more tightly on issues such as workforce development or social justice. Alternatively, they are moving away from support of higher education altogether in preference for programs aimed at K-12 education. At the same time, donor-advised funds are growing in popularity while some traditional foundations are adopting “sunset” provisions and spending themselves out of existence. Moreover, higher education is now very much in the spotlight, as controversial new federal policies are being proposed. All of these changes present new, unfamiliar challenges to college and university presidents and other institutional leaders who are seeking support for new initiatives.

Program

The format of the Conversation follows the pattern used since 2004, with plenary sessions and generous amounts of time for discussion during each session, as well as informal networking opportunities between sessions. In addition, there will be an opportunity for small group discussions with foundation executives, a popular feature from earlier years..
