Teagle Collaborative Ventures
In 1999, CAPHE was invited to design and administer a study of The Teagle
Foundation's Collaborative Ventures Program. The Foundation wanted to
understand how collaborations work from the perspective of institutional
leaders, that would help chief executive officers, boards of trustees,
and others understand the critical elements of successful collaborations
so that they might use the information to position their institutions
in the future. Information was collected and analyzed regarding the experiences
of 34 collaborative venture grants awarded between 1996 and 2001. Through
a series of telephone interviews and document anaylsis, each of the 34
collaborations was investigated. Additionally, representatives from a
number of collaborations also participated in regional focus group meetings
and site visits. The collaborations involved as few as two institutions
and as many as 24. In each case, the lead institution was either a private
college, university, or theological school.
Funder: The Teagle Foundation, Inc.
Program Status: The program officially ended in summer 2002. Two
monographs, Collaborative Ventures with Special Focus on Private Colleges
and Universities by Mary-Linda Merriam Armacost (2002) and Collaborative
Ventures with Special Focus on Theological Schools by James A. Coriden
and Mary-Linda Merrian Armacost (2002) were prepared by CAPHE for The
Teagle Foundation. These monographs focus on the experiences of deans
and presidents, but also draw on the experiences of chief academic officers,
faculty, staff, and various association executives whose organizations
participated in the program. The results of these candid conversations
are presented in these two publications. Copies can be obtained by
contacting The Teagle Foundation, 10 Rockefeller Plaza, Room 920, New
York, NY, 10020-1903; (212) 373-1970.
