Grant-Funded Programs. Both foundations and federal agencies rely on CIC to conduct grant programs that directly benefit large numbers of institutions in higher education. Participation in many of these programs is competitive. These initiatives support innovative work by independent colleges and universities and broadly disseminate resulting ideas to other institutions. CIC's knowledge of private colleges and universities and its credibility with institutional leaders enables CIC to solicit and select participating institutions and to monitor their work. Topic areas have included college/community partnerships, exchanges between historically black institutions and other private colleges, cooperation with schools in science and in service-learning, workshops about making strategic decisions based on data about each institution in comparison with its peers, faculty seminars on Islam and Middle Eastern culture, issues in American history, and applying the cultural artifacts of ancient Greece across the curriculum. In addition, CIC sponsors awards programs. Click here for additional information about these programs.

Special Projects. Foundations, government agencies, and corporate philanthropic units support a variety of CIC initiatives that provide practical resources to college and university leaders. Examples include small-group presidential forums, a national library of electronic materials for classroom use, workshops on libraries and technology, a symposium for business and higher education leaders, seminars on presidential vocation and institutional mission, customized benchmarking reports to college presidents on key indicators of institutional performance, and a database of historic campus architecture sites. Click here for more information about CIC's projects and services.

Foundation Conversation. CIC holds an annual Conversation between Foundation Officers and College and University Presidents. This meeting provides an opportunity for foundation officers and institutional presidents to discuss a topic of emerging importance. Themes have included institutional cooperation with K-12 schools, roles and responsibilities of liberal arts institutions in a democratic society, what foundations expect from colleges regarding social change, and building resources to internationalize liberal arts colleges and universities.

Sponsorship. Businesses and nonprofit organizations participate as sponsors in two annual gatherings of presidents and academic leaders from small and medium-sized private liberal arts colleges and universities. CIC's annual Presidents Institute, the largest gathering of private college and university presidents in the nation, provides opportunities to attend sessions and to talk informally with more than 300 presidents and other higher education leaders in a casual and friendly atmosphere. The annual Institute for Chief Academic Officers provides a similar format for sponsors with regard to these institutions' provosts, vice presidents of academic affairs, and deans. CIC's annual Department/Division Chair Workshops also benefit from sponsors' support.

General Support. Funding organizations also support general CIC activities, including strategic planning, program development, and improvements in infrastructure.
