CIC engages in a variety of listening practices to consider the interests of its members. Through roundtables, phone conversations, task forces, surveys, meetings, and interaction with the Board of Directors, CIC constantly gauges the pulse of the membership to inform its annual planning.

During 2001, CIC undertook a formal strategic planning process to determine future directions for the organization, during which many practices and initiatives were determined that are now in operation today. Over 20 roundtable discussions were held on member campuses between March and October 2001. Presidents, chief academic officers, and CIC board members were among the major constituent groups participating. Individuals from over 200 member and non-member institutions contributed to the discussions.

Following an endorsement of the plan by CIC's Board of Directors, a final report, Strategic Planning Initiative: Report to Membership was published in January 2002.
